A Kano-based medical practitioner, Dr Fawziyya Ahmed, has identified the use of mosquito nets as the best and most effective prevention against malaria.

The doctor, who disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano, on Monday, added that the use of nets was favoured due to the nature of our environment, where there were open drainages everywhere.

Ahmed warned against self-prescription of drugs as was usually practised, urging residents to make little savings in order to purchase mosquito nets.

“The state and the Federal Governments are trying, as they distribute free mosquito-treated nets annually, but the country’s population makes it difficult for everyone to access the free nets.

“So, it’s advisable that people invest in buying the nets, which are cheaper than anti-malarial drugs and injection to treat the ailment,” she said.

The raining season, she said, had already begun, thereby creating the right environment for the mass breeding of mosquitoes, especially at areas with contaminated water.

She, therefore, appealed to residents to ensure good environmental hygiene to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
