Women of Inestimable Values (WIV), a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), has urged parents to utilise the mid-term holiday by some schools to review the academic achievement of children and wards, to enhance their academic performances.

Mrs Blessing Okojie-Eze, WIV National President, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that such review would help to identify unpleasant changes in children.

Okojie-Eze said that the school management could address indiscipline or academic lapses in a child, if the challenge is detected early.

“Some schools are already on mid-term holiday while others will be observing theirs next week. Therefore, parents should use the break to closely monitor their wards.

“Although, the number of days for the mid-term holiday is short, parents who are very observant will notice when the child starts exhibiting some bad behaviours, including bullying his or her siblings.

“Such children must be chastised right from home, and it is also fundamental that the school authority be notified for follow-up to avoid any unforseen circumstances.

”It is important to check the performances, test scripts, if their notes are up-to-date, assignments, corrections and further ask them questions on areas they are having challenges,” she said.

According to her, good communication should be encouraged in the family, to provide enabling environment for the children to share experiences with parents during holidays.

“Some might have been bullied by their seniors and warned never to report, but in a situation where everyone communicated in the family, the child will open up to the parents and siblings,” she said.

The WIV president noted that students on mid-term break are usually loaded with assignment on various subjects, adding that parents should spare time to know the level of the child’s commitment to studies.

She advised parents to endeavour to provide necessary materials required by the school authorities to deliver quality teaching to their wards every academic session.

NAN reports that the WIV foundation is an NGO that fights against domestic violence, child abuse, gender inequality and promotes children’s welfare.
