The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) FCT command says it has begun the ’ember’ months road safety campaigns to secure lives and property before, during and after the Yuletide season.
The Sector Commander, Mr Gora Wobin, said this while inaugurating the campaign on Thursday in Abuja.
Wobin said that the annual exercise was to remind motorists of the need to be safety conscious.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2020 ’ember’ months campaign was tagged “Drive Safe, Stay Safe”.
Wobin said that the Yuletide season comes with various traffic challenges, adding that adherence to laid down traffic rules and regulations was the best way to stay alive during the ’ember months.
According to him, the period always witnessed a lot of travelling and economic boom for our transporters.
“We need to be alive to celebrate and maximise the potentials of this season, which calls for safety caution.
“Some of the things we preach against include over-speeding, drinking alcohol while driving or driving when drunk, and that all commercial vehicles must have speed limiter installed, to mention a few.
“Obedience is better than sacrificing your lives. Remember that if a driver is bent on suicide, do not allow him or her to take you along; warn him or her, ” he said.
Wobin urged the public to observe the COVID-19 protocols while traveling saying that collective effort of everyone was needed to ensure safety of all.
Also speaking, a traditional ruler, the ‘Sapeyi’ of Garki, Alh. Usman Kupi urged other security agencies to collaborate with FRSC to ensure hitch-free celebration in FCT.
Kupi said that road safety was everyone’s business, urging that all hands must be on deck to ensure safety of lives and property.
He advised drivers to stay-off alcohol and drugs to avoid road crashes, loss of lives and property, saying that any driver found with drugs or alcohol should be sanctioned.
The FCT Chairman, Road Transport Employers’ Association Of Nigeria (RTEAN), Mr Musa Saidu, commended the FRSC for the roles they play towards achieving maximum safety standards on the road.
Saidu said that the safety of lives and properties was paramount to the association and assured that all COVID-19 protocols would be duly observed.
“We have started and will continue to work against drinking alcohol and driving and we assure you that very soon it will be a thing of the past.
“We will continue to appreciate the efforts of the FRSC and we urge them to continue to monitor over- speeding and overloading of vehicles, “he said.
