Sokoto State House of Assembly on Thursday adopted a motion urging the state government to extend Ramadan feeding to the 23 local government areas of the state, rather than limiting it to the state capital.
The motion was moved by Alhaji Bashar Isah (PDP-Tambuwal East) and seconded by Alhaji Kabiru Dauda (APC-Gada East).
It emphasised the importance of ensuring that the less- privileged across the state had access to meals during the month of Islamic fasting.
Moving the motion, Isah highlighted the tradition of the state government of providing food packages in the capital city only during Ramadan and proposed the extension of the gesture to cover the entire state.
He also highlighted the economic challenges faced by the people, especially in the rural areas, because of high prices of food items.
“With the current economic challenges which has impacted the rural areas in particular negatively, it is imperative to extend this assistance.
“Many people in the rural areas cannot afford food; some struggle to get what they will break the fast with; it is very important to provide support to alleviate their sufferings,’’ Isah said.
Members of the house unanimously adopted the motion after the Speaker, Alhaji Tukur Bala, put it to a voice vote.
