Leadership play an important and vital roles in every organization. For any organization to attain it’s stated goals and objectives consistency in the leadership is indispensable that is needed to ensure stability which will enable the organization concerned to focus on pursuing organizational goals and objectives.
The success or failures of any organization both private and the public one. Absence and lacks of consistent leadership is a serious impediment that will affect growth and development of the affected organization.
The question of leadership needs to be addressed squarely whenever the needs arises because any delay may stagnate the organizational growth and development.
In educational institutions consistency of leadership is imperative to maintain internal peace within the academic community on one hand, and cordial, benefial, harmonious and mutual relationship with the host communities on the other to cement a good relationship between town and gown.
Committed, determine and hardworking leadership is basic in educational institutions particularly universities in facilitating conducive atmosphere for teaching, learning and research. These can only be possible where there is consistency and stability in the leadership.
Federal University Dutsinma (FUDMA) is one of the leading universities among those established by the former President His Excellency Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in 2011. At the takeup of these New Universities, Federal University Dutse (FUD) and Federal University Dutsinma (FUDMA) became the role models due to rapid development they were able to achieved within a shorttime of their establishment were able to move steps ahead of their peers.
However, the fortunes of FUDMA changes with the appointment of the Second Vice-Chancellor and his subsequent suspension by the Governing Council and legal action filed by the suspended Vice-Chancellor for his reinstatement.
The advertisement for the position of the Vice-Chancellor in the Daily Trust Newspaper of Wednesday 17th January, 2018 at page 32 paragraphs 1.0 and 8.0 necessited the National Industrial Court of Nigeria Kano Judicial Division in the SUIT NO: NICN/KN/29/2017 Between Professor Haruna Abdu Kaita and The Governing Council Federal University Dutsinma to make the following order to halt the Governing Council from meddling with the office of the Vice-Chancellor pending the determination of the suit:
dated 18th day of January, 2018.
“It is hereby Ordered that the parties to this suit maintain the status quo ante bellum in due regard to the rule law until all pending application in this matter (3) of them heard and dispensed with. To wit the Originating Summon filed on 31st May, 2017. The motion on notice for interlocutory injunction filed on 31st May, 2017, and the Notice of Preliminary Objection filed on the 23rd of October, 2017”
In an attempt to respect the Court’s the learned Counsel to the defendants A.A. Umar & Co. in his letter titled PROGRESS REPORT NO.2 IN RE: PROFESSOR HARUNA ABDU KAITA VS. GOVERNING COUNCIL, FEDERAL UNIVERSITY DUTSINMA & OTHERS IN SUIT NO.NICN/KN/29/2017 dated 6th day of August, 2018 addressed to The Chairman Governing Council, Federal University Dutsinma, Katsina State. The learned Counsel in the letter do all what is needful to draw the attention of his clients to respect Court’s Order. He said that;
“Kindly note that, the Court directed parties to maintain status quo Antebellum, meaning that the council should not deal in any manner with the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, therefore, we advise that all actions concerning appointment, selection or nomination related or connected with the Office of the Vice-Chancellor be steyed to avoid being in collusion course with the court order like our previous nasty experience in court over an incident, where some security personnel of the university were alleged to have molested and assaulted a Bailiff of the when he came to serve the council with a court order…. further stated that we strongly advise against changing status quo based on the Order made. Therefore, the council should not conduct any election/nomination even on acting capacity into the office of the Vice-Chancellor, which was the Atatus Quo Ante Bellum. Note also, the court extracted an undertaking from us (on your behalf) as your counsel to the effect that you will not take any further step to change the status quo on the office of the Vice-Chancellor in whatever manner pending final determination of this suit, because as at the time the court made the order for the maintenance of the Status Quo Ante Bellum Prof A. H. Bichi was the person acting in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, so legally, you must maintain this status quo ante bellum as to the office Vice-Chancellor and the composition of the investigation committee since they are subject matter of dispute till the final disposition of the case. Please find attached herewith the copy of the Order handed down by the court for your notice, records and adherence”.
In view of the above Progress Report No.2 of the learned Counsels of the defendants deserves special commendations for their boldness to tell their clients the bitter truth and the position of the law with regard to Office of the Vice-Chancellor to maintain the status quo ante bellum which expressly and clearly without any ambiguity means to retain Prof. A.H. Bichi as the acting Vice-Chancellor pending the final determination of the case.
We expected the Governing Council of Federal University Dutsinma as a body created by law to respect and comply with the Court Order. However, to our greatest dismay the Governing Council disrespect, disobeyed and ignores the order despite the fact that their counsels advised them to comply and warn them of the grievous consequences of continuous contravention and violations of the said.
Instead of maintaining the Status Quo Ante Bellum ordered by the court, the Governing Council of Federal University Dutsinma continued to appoints acting Vice-Chancellors with impunity by disobeying Cour Order that restrained them from tempering with the status quo ante bellum.
What is going on in Federal University Dutsinma is really unfortunate which puts the university in a great risk of stagnation due inconsistent and unstable leadership in the university.
The conduct of Governing Council of lawlessness exhibited by the council is uncalled for and is not in the best interest of the university, university community and the general public.
At this juncture, we are appealing to the Visitor His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR and the Hon Minister of Education Mallam Adamu Adamu to urgently intervene in this matter as men of honor and integrity to bring peace and sanity into Federal University Dutsinma.
It is so disheartening that, University Governing Council who were expected to be law abiding and disciplined to lead by good examples but that of FUDMA are moving in opposite directions of what is expected from good leaders.
Please Mr President and Hon Minister of Education save FUDMA from total collapse.
