Police Arraign Three Over Alleged Membership of Secret Cult

The police, on Friday, arraigned three men before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun for allegedly belonging to a secret cult.

The defendants, according to the Prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Osanyintuyi, are Adebiyi Banjo, 25; Falaju Majeed, 35 and Akingbehin Daniel, 35.

The prosecutor told the court that the accused committed the offence on Jan. 1, around 05:30 pm. at Nonso Brothel, Obalufon area, Ile-Ife.

He said that the accused conspired to commit felony to wit: unlawful assembly and cultism.

Osanyintuyi added that the accused unlawfully assembled themselves, with intent to go out around 06:00 am. to conduct themselves in a manner that could cause fear and disturb the peace of the neighbourhood.

According to him, the defendants unlawfully belong to a secret cult called Eiye Confraternity, which has reportedly been disrupting the peace of Ile-Ife.

The prosecutor stated further that the offence contravened Sections 62, 64, 69, 70 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The Defence Counsel, Mr Wole Omotosho, prayed the court to grant his clients bail in the most liberal term, promising that they would not jump bail, but would provide reliable sureties.

Magistrate Joseph Owolawi granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 each, with two sureties in like sum.

Owolawi said that the sureties must swear to affidavit of means, reside within the court jurisdiction and present three recent passport photographs each.

The case was, thereafter, adjourned till Feb. 2 for hearing.
