The Ondo State Government, has financially empowered 200 indigent widows among other families, who are extremely distressed in the state.
The wife of the governor, Betty Akeredolu, made this disclosure at the presentation of cash, to the beneficiaries in Akure.
Akeredolu described the role played by women in stabilising the family as vital, adding that widows should not be discriminated against but be supported  at all times.
The governor’s wife, who was represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Titi Adeyemi, enjoined women to be good role models to their families and the society at large.
According to her, when the family is stable, the society will develop; hence the need for women to build their homes.
She assured that the present government would not rest on its oars to ensure better living standards and social progress of families in the state.
The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs Alaba Adeyemi, who also represented the commissioner, explained that a special day had been set aside by the United Nations to promote issues relating to the well being of the family and widows in the society.
The commissioner affirmed that the present government was highly committed to the welfare of families and would ameliorate the plights of widows to make life bearable and worth living for them.
Adeyemi maintained that the family, being the basic unit of the society and main agent of socialisation  would continue to be strengthened to enable it function appropriately.
She noted that the world acknowledged the capability and ability of the family system, which was considered the most basic unit of the society.
Adeyemi stressed the need for widows to be empowered in the society, noting that every woman must find something doing because of unforeseen circumstances.
A beneficiary, Mrs Deborah Ajayi, lauded the state government for the gesture and promised to make a judicious use of the funds and the items.
