The acting Comptroller-General (CG) of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mr Idris Jere, has given assurance that the NIS would continue to protect Nigerian borders to enhance peace and development.
Jere gave the assurance in Dutse on Saturday after he paid a condolence visit to the family of a NIS personnel killed by gunmen in Birniwa Local Government Area of the state.
He stressed that the service’ commitment to secure the country’s national borderlines was non negotiable, adding that NIS would continue to offer excellent protective cover across the national borderlines.
The CG explained that the service would deploy modern border security approaches in order to ensure effective border security and management.
“We’re also innovating on modern security approaches to border security, including deployment of e-border to enhance effective border security and management”, he said.
Jere urged all well meaning Nigerians to join hands to overcome the security challenges bedevilling the country.
“The current security challenges in our country requires the contribution of all and sundry. We need to contribute to fix our problems”, he said.
He, therefore, sought for the support of the media to ensure the success of NIS operations in the state and Nigeria at large.
On the visit, Jere said he was in the state to condole with the family of the deceased NIS personnel.
“I’m here to condole with the family of Abdullahi, a very gallant officer who paid the supreme price while on duty.
“They were patrolling Galadi-Birniwa axis on Aug. 9 when they came under attack by some unscrupulous elements.
“Abdullahi and his colleagues put up great resistance and repelled the attackers. Unfortunately they sustained heavy injuries and consequently Abdullahi answered the call of the Almighty.
“I’m therefore in Jigawa to appreciate and honor his gallantry, sacrifice and commitment to the safety and protection of our national territorial integrity,” he said.
The CG announced the donation of N4 million to the deceased family and the injured personnel, donated by one of NIS’ service providers, CONTENC.
He also announced undisclosed welfare package from the service for the deceased and the injured personnel.
Jere also visited the two other officers who were hospitalised.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that bandits on Aug. 9, attacked a NIS Patrol Base along Birniwa-Galadi axis and opened fire on some immigration officers who were on patrol.
The attack led to the death of CIA Abdullahi Mohammed while two of his colleagues sustained serious injuries.
