Newspaper Publishers Elect New Executive At AGM

The chairman of Media Trust, which publishes Daily Trust and Trust Television, Mal. Kabiru A. Yusuf, has been re-elected as the president of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN) for another term.

Other officers returned in the election include publisher of Business Day, Mr. Frank Aigbogun, as the vice president, and chairman of The Punch, Mrs. Angela Emuwa, as the general secretary.

Also, Mr. Fidelis Anosike, who previously served as the assistant general secretary of the Association was elected as the treasurer, paving the way for the election of the editor-in-chief of LEADERSHIP, Mr. Azubuike Ishiekwene, to fill the vacated seat.

Mrs. Emuwa takes the position vacated by Alhaji Mohammed Idris who was recently appointed as the minister of Information and National Orientation by President Bola Tinubu. Mr. Anosike fills the position previously held by Mr. Olawale Edun, the minister of Finance and coordinating minister for the Economy.

Other elected officials include deputy president and publisher of The Guardian, Lady Maiden Alex-Ibru, publicity secretary and group managing director of The Champion, Dr. Nwadiuto Iheakanwa, ex-officio member and past president of NPAN, Mr. Ray Ekpu and ex-officio member and publisher of Nigerian Pilot, Prince Dennis Sami.

The managing director of New Telegraph, Mr. Ayodele Aminu, was also elected as an ex-officio member.

Mr. Aigbogun’s appointment as vice president came about after an amendment to the Association’s constitution, which created the office of vice president, proposed by two patrons of the Association, publisher of THISDAY, Mr. Nduka Obaigbena, and Chief Olusegun Osoba.

Speaking shortly after the election, President Mal Kabiru expressed confidence that the new officers would invigorate the Executive Council in pursuing the association’s objectives.
