Mental Health, according to the World Health Organization, is “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”. The WHO stresses that mental health “is not just the absence of mental disorder.” Moreover, in a simpler terms, Mental Health refers to the overall psychological well-being of a person. It is the state of having a normal healthy mind and emotion.

In the past, people who suffer from mental health disorders are seen as crazy, dangerous and also incompetent in managing their lives. Even though this archaic and negative perceptions were not true, it nonetheless contributed a great deal in making people refrain from seeking help. It made people feel scared and ashamed to speak up about their mental health conditions in fear of being looked down upon or perceived as crazy and dangerous by others.

In recent years however, the increasing rise in mental health awareness and campaigns has made it possible for people to find it easier to open up to discuss their mental conditions. Although the stigma surrounding mental illnesses is still in existence, people are gaining more courage to forego the stigma and seek help from mental health experts because of the importance involved in doing this. Lots of people are now realizing that it is normal to seek help and that they are not alone in the battle because a huge number of people are going through the same struggles every day.

Getting the necessary support and reaching out to the right mental health experts would improve an individual’s overall quality of life. It would help improve a person’s productivity, well-being and motivate people towards actively managing and coping with their stressors. While there are wide range of treatment options available out there, it is not okay for people to just suffer in silence.

For every reasonable person, it would sound too ironic to believe that it is okay to be physically sick and suffer from leg pain but it is not okay to be mentally sick as if the brain and mind is not part of the human body. The brain and mind have the rights to be sick just like every other part of the human body so yes, seeking help for any type of mental health disorder is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, it is bravery to forego mental health stigma and reach out to a good mental health expert for proper treatment. It is also very crucial for anybody suffering, to take this step for an opportunity towards becoming a better individual.
