A 40-year-old man, Michael Timothy, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment by a Kaduna Chief Magistrate’s Court for defrauding a woman of N1.8 million under the false pretense of securing a Canadian visa for her.
Timothy pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to a two-year term without the option of a fine by Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel. The sentence will run concurrently, serving as a deterrent to others, the magistrate stated.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, Timothy obtained the money from Cynthia Cole through fraudulent means.
Timothy was charged with obtaining money by false pretense, an offense that contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
Four witnesses were called during the trial, who provided testimonies detailing how Timothy committed the crime in February 2023.
