The Director-General, Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC), Mr Lanre Mojola, has declared zero tolerance for safety infractions in the state.

Mojola made this known in a statement signed by the Assistant Director, Public Relations of LSSC, Mrs Adewunmi Okoh, and made available to newsmen in Lagos on Sunday.

Mojola declared zero tolerance for safety infractions in the state during a Safety Awareness Campaign, tagged: “Keep Safe, Stay Alive’’ on Saturday at Lagos Island.

According to the statement, the commission engaged traders, commuters and residents at Tafawa Balewa Square, CMS, Tinubu Square, Nnamdi Azikwe St., Oluwole St., Tom-Jones St., during the sensitisation conducted and engaged in four languages comprising English, Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo.

Mojola who led the campaign while addressing the crowd and market women, stressed the need to be alert on practices that would not compromise safety at homes and market places.

He attributed carelessness, nonchalant attitude and storage of flammable materials as some of the major causes of fire outbreaks which had led to loss of lives and property.

Mojola advised that safety measures should be put in place in markets, particularly making provision for fire extinguishers, non-storage of flammable substances in shops and safety signage at designated places within the markets.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr Wale Ahmed, who also joined the campaign, lent his voice to the theme of the programme, urging residents to report unsafe activities to the authorities.

The LSSC team halted the campaign at a construction site on Nnamdi Azikwe St., Lagos Island, where safety infractions were observed to have been violated.

To prevent fatal incidents, the building was sealed off immediately, while the commission promised to investigate the construction activities on the site.

Also at the campaign were the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Prince Anofi Elegushi; Senior Special Assistant to Governor on Central Business District, Hon. Sola Giwa; and award-winning hip-hop artiste, Patoranking.
