Many persons are feared killed in an attack by rampaging gunmen suspected to be herdsmen on Shuwa-Kala’a Village in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, north east Nigeria.
Locals and security sources say that others sustained injuries during the attack.
A fleeing farmer who simple identified himself as Nicholas Emmanuel told reporters on phone that, “The armed herdsmen attacked the village on Saturday afternoon.
Another resident of the area, Dauda Baba added that since the commencement of the harvest season, herdsmen had been terrorising the area.
In his words, “This morning they (herdsman) attacked and robbed a man who went to the farm to bring home his harvest.
“He returned and had barely informed the community of what happened to him when we saw them coming from all angles.
“Our local vigilante quickly mobilised and put up resistance and were able to repel them.
“But there are casualties on both sides but I cannot ascertain how many.”
Baba however, said the military had intervened and he hope they will be able to push the herdsmen far away.
When contacted, spokesperson for the police, DSP Suleiman Nguroje, said he needed time to get the report from the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Hong.
But a local vigilante official who doesn’t want to be named as he was not authorised to speak to press has confided that, ” Our commandant has since deployed some of our men to assist police and are giving the bandits hot-chased.
“The rampaging gunmen suspected to be herdsmen had kept series of attacks in the recent time, our major challenges are mobility and logistics to fight the bandits,” he exclaimed.
