Former Senator Abubakar Halilu Girei has called for urgent action to address Nigeria’s economic challenges, proposing a range of solutions, including a presidential order to require all political office holders to contribute 40% of their salaries and allowances towards alleviating the suffering of Nigerians.
Girei stated this during a press conference in his Dougeirei residence in Yola, Adamawa State capital, on Thursday.
On job creation, he proposed that a presidential order be issued requiring all political office holders at the national, state, and local government levels to contribute 40% of their salaries and allowances for two year.
He said a supplementary budget of N1 trillion should be presented to the National Assembly, while N2 trillion should be allocated towards addressing insecurity.
Senator Girei also recommended implementing the White Paper on the Oronsanye Report to rationalize the MDAs and reduce the cost of governance.
Furthermore, a meeting of the National Council of State and National Economic Council should be convened to harmonize their positions and implement necessary political measures to ease the suffering of Nigerians.
Senator Girei emphasized the need to address corruption, particularly in the administration of subsidies on petroleum products and electricity.
He recommended that a forensic audit be carried out to uncover any fraud associated with tax, VAT, and other revenue accruing to the federation.
