A 41-year-old driver, Monday Ikudehinbu, was on Wednesday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly belonging to an unlawful society and assaulting police officers.
Ikudehinbu, a resident of Ikorodu area of Lagos, was facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, belonging to an unlawful society and assault on police officers.
According to Unuigbe, the defendant and some other men, still at large, were members of an unlawful society popularly called “Eiye”.
He said that the Police had gotten information of an initiation gathering of the members of the secret society, where the defendant was arrested.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 411, 42 (a) and 174 (b) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 174 (b) stipulates three years imprisonment for the offence of assaulting a police officer who was on duty.
The defendant however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The defendant was granted N300,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
Chief Magistrate Mrs Adebola Adedayo, said that the sureties must be gainfully employed with an evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
Adedayo adjourned the case until Sept. 28 for mention.
