A German court on Thursday convicted and sentenced a right-wing extremist, Stephan Ernst, to jail for life for murdering a top German politician in 2019.

Ernst was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Walter Luebcke, a pro-refugee politician whose 2019 death shocked Germany.

The convict is likely to spend at least 15 years in prison due to the seriousness of the crime, the judges in Frankfurt’s higher regional court ruled, while reserving the right to keep the 47-year-old in preventive detention even longer.

The court found that Ernst shot Luebcke in the head on the politician’s own porch on June 2, 2019.

Luebcke, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats who led the local government in the district of Kassel, is believed to have been targeted due to his support for migrants. (dpa/NAN)
