Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has urged Nigerians to be their brother’s keepers so as to build a better country.
The governor stated this on Sunday during a service marking the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, held at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Aremo, Ibadan.
Makinde, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mrs Olubamiwo Adeosun, harped on the need to always support families of the fallen heroes.
He stressed the need to reflect on the security situation in the country for the purpose of devising means of tackling cases of insurgency.
“I want to congratulate the Nigerian Armed Forces on the occasion of the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration in honour of the gallant soldiers who laid down their lives in the course of their duties to our nation and the world in general.
“Let us all make it a point of duty to remember them and their souls shall rest in peace. May God continually provide for their families,” he prayed.
The governor appealed to all to adhere to COVID-19 protocols by wearing face masks, sanitising their hands regularly and maintaining social distancing.
Earlier in his sermon, the Provost of the church, Rev. Wale Adebiyi, appreciated members of the Nigerian Armed Forces for laying down their lives in defence of their country.
The cleric described their sacrifices and actions as ‘indispensable’ in the society, advising them to always put God first in all their dealings.
He sued for patriotism, saying this would make the country great.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the occasioned was graced by the GOC 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Maj-Gen. Anthony Omozoje and Commander, 2 Division Garrison, Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. T. A. Ogunsugba.
Others were the Chairman, Nigerian Legion, Oyo State Command, Mr Michael Fajimi and representatives of other paramilitary organisations. (NAN)
