Bayero University Kano is second to none when it to the promotion and propagation of Islamic ideals among the staff, students and visitors to the university. At the time when social activities such as dancing competitions, party and other social gatherings that promotes moral decadence becomes so prominent in other universities and tertiary institutions, in Bayero University reverse is the case whereby in addition to the academic pursuits the students usually engaged in extramural classes in mosques and hostels to know and learn more about Qur’an and Hadith. Ustaz and Sisters were respected and held with high esteemed as role models more especially in 80s, 90s and 20s.
As a result of this unique nature parents from far and near feels at ease and secured to sent their children both males and females because of absence of cultism and other related activities that promotes insecurity and moral decadence.
During the weekend the university becomes popular for Daril Hadith by Sheikh Dr Ahmad Bamba attended by Muslims from far and near. The two (2) Jumaat Mosques of old and new campus were attended by thousands of Muslims for the weekly Friday’s prayer.
In order to accommodate the mass gatherings of Muslims, the University Management through the Mosque Committee wanted to have a bigger mosque at the new campus. This dream almost comes true on the 17th April, 2004, the day the University authority organized a special convocation to honour the former Vice-president his Excellency Alhaji Atiku Abubakar (Turakin Adamawa) as he then who promised to build a befitting Islamic Center that will consists of Jumaat Mosque, Islamiyya School, Imam residence, library and other aspects of Islamic religion in order to promotes teaching and learning of Islam by making it easy and accessible to all. After the convocation, the Turaki of Adamawa leads the ground breaking ceremony for the building of Islamic Center. Since then nothing was done on it.
However, the University Muslims Community do not lose hopes in the pursuing of this important project. In the process late Khalifa Sheikh Isyaku Rabiu was approached to build the Department of Islamic Studies. The Sheikh knowing the values of Islamic Knowledge among Muslims he built the Department of Islamic Studies close to the Directorate for Examinations and Records.
In order to actualize the dream of the Muslims Community, the mosque committee came with initiatives for monthly contributions from the members and willing donors in order to build a new Jumaat Mosque detached from the staff quarters that can be easily located by those coming to pray.
The completion of this mosque is a landmark achievements and legacies for the Bayero University Kano Muslims Community. There are a lot of lessons that we are going to derive from their efforts and determination that makes it a reality. Whenever as Muslims we intended to execute any capital project or Da’awa we should try as much as possible to reduce over-reliance on one or few wealth individuals in our midst, we can still succeed by contributing something from our earnings no matter how little. With the little contributions the project now is reality slated for commussioning on Friday 6th December, 2019.
My appeal to the Bayero University Muslims Community is to proceed with their plans to build modern Islamiyya School that will provide conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning of Islamic ideals.
May Almighty Allah rewards all those who contributed in whatever ways towards the successful completion of New Jumaat Mosque at the New Sites of Bayero University Kano.
