A Kano based Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), Hope Foundation, has urged the Kano State Government to punish parents who exposed their daughters to street hawking.

The Coordinator of the Foundation, Mrs Naja’atu Ahmed, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Kano on Monday.

Naja’atu noted that street hawking continued unabated in spite of the efforts of development organisations and state government to address the menace.

“It is disturbing to see girls and boys hawk in the street in spite of the ills associated with the act.

“We conducted awareness campaign on street hawking and provided livelihood support to mothers in communities, to discourage parents from sending their daughters to hawk on the street.

“It is desirable to sanction parents who send their daughters to hawk on the street,” Ahmed said.

Accoding to her, girls who engage in street hawking are expose to danger, vices and abuse.

Ahmed lauded the Kano State Government’s free and compulsory education programme, adding that the measure would enhance development and protection of the girl-child in the state.

The Coordinator further called for proactive measures to ensure effective monitoring of the programme to encourage school enrollment.
