Mr Bamidele Oleyelogun, the Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, on Wednesday in Akure distributed food items to the Nigerian Union of Journalists ( NUJ), Ondo State Council and staff of the assembly.

Presenting the relief items, Oleyelogun said that media practitioners in the state were considered for the palliatives because they provided essential services to the society, including covering and reporting coronavirus cases.

He said that the palliatives, which consist of bags of rice, beans, packs of hand sanitisers, would go a long way in cushioning the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on journalists in the state.

” I consider your duties as very essential, particularly during this COVID-19 pandemic.

“Like health workers who are in the frontline of the treatment of the coronavirus patients, you journalists are also in the forefront of educating and sensitising the public on the deadly virus.

“You give us update on the virus and government’s efforts to tackle the virus.

“I do appreciate your efforts, Ondo State House of Assembly appreciates you, our dear state and its entire citizens appreciate you,” he said.

The speaker prayed that the Lord would continue to protect the journalists and their families as they continue to discharge their duties.

Oleyelogun also presented palliatives to workers in the state House of Assembly.

According to him, similar gesture has been extended to his constituents in Ifedore Local Government Area of the state and Idanre Local Government Area of the state.

He appealed to the NUJ in the state to continue to enlighten the populace and inform them on the need to comply with precautionary measures put in place by the state government and other authorities.

Mr Adetona Aderoboye, the state Chairman of NUJ, lauded the gesture, describing it as compassionate and aimed at giving succour to people that were affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Aderoboye promised that the journalists in the state would continue to support the state House of Assembly in carrying out its constitutional duties for the betterment of the state.

Speaking on behalf of the workers in the state assembly, Mr Bode Adeyelu, the Clerk, thanked the Speaker and described the palliative as a welcome development.

Adeyelu said that the Speaker had always been mindful of the welfare and well-being of the staff.

He prayed that God would continue to guide him, promising dedication of the workers to their work.
