Mr Eddy Megwa, Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Lagos State, says three corps members have been appointed to function as camp directors at the 2021 Batch ‘B’ Stream 2
Orientation.
Megwa announced this on Tuesday in Lagos at the swearing-in ceremony of 1,631 corps members in the Batch B Stream 2, deployed to the state.
Describing the scheme as the largest youth organisation in Africa, Megwa said the appointment was to demonstrate that youths were not only leaders of tomorrow but those of today.
“We have found it necessary and very auspicious to appoint three of them camp directors, and they have all the rights and privileges to function fully as administrative heads in the orientation camp.
“It is also to posit them as leaders of today, as each will function for one week and address their colleagues every morning.
“That is the spirit of leadership.
“There is need, therefore, to begin to engage these young ones, as their brains are sharp and their contributions not equalled.
” Give them any assignment, they will deliver; all they need is encouragement.” he said.
He said that all the corps members would be subjected to a nine-day skills acquisition in photography, fashion/design, shoe/bag making and cathering.
He expressed the hope that the skills would fortify the corps members to be self-employed and even employers of labour.
“You must learn how to assist yourselves and get meaningfully engaged,” he told the corps members.
Megwa said that adequate measures had been put in place for the safety of corps members.
He said that all the 1,631 corps members tested negative to COVID-19 before entering the camp.
He urged them to continue to observe precautionary measures against the spread of the pandemic.
“Be of good character and be role models to other youths out there,” Megwa said.
He also called on the corps members to always be their brothers’ keepers.
According to him, the only language the scheme understands is unity in diversity.
Megwa also represented the state Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the occasion.
In his address, the governor urged the corps members to strive to surpass records of corps members who earlier served in the state.
“We are expecting so much from you as you embark on this national assignment.
”Note that we have been privileged to host series of batches, and their contributions to the general development of this state cannot be overemphasised.
“I am optimistic that the activities of your batch will greatly surpass that of your predecessors as you will be passing through the orientation programmes, primary assignment and community development service.
“We also believe that at the end of this three-week orientation, and as you are posted in your places of primary assignments, you will make your marks highly indelible,” the governor said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Owolabi Dabiri, who representated the Chief Judge of Lagos State, swore-in the corps members comprising 774 males and 884 females. (NAN)www.nannews.ng
