A 23-year-old man, Samuel Sangogbade, on Tuesday appeared before a Badagry Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly defrauding one Mr Waheed Ayinla of N3.8 million.

Sangogbade, whose address was not provided, is facing a three-count charge of fraud, stealing and breach of peace.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, ASP. Clement Okuiomose, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Feb. 21 at Araromiale area of Badagry.

Okuiomose said the defendant collected the N3.8 million from the complainant, Ayinla, that he would double the money for him, but he never did.

He said the defendant converted the N3.79 million to his personal use.

The prosecutor said that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to breach the peace when he claimed to be a ‘money doubler,’ a represention he knew was false.

Okuiomose said the offences contravened Sections 314, 287 and 168 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates three years’ jail term for stealing.

The Chief Magistrate, Fadahunsi Adefioye, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Adefioye said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction with evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State government.

The chief magistrate adjourned the case until Sept. 2 for mention. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
