Chief Charles Udeogaranya, an APC presidential aspirant in 2019 and Igbo Leader based in Lagos, has urged Imo, Abia and Lagos governments to immortalise the late retired Rear Adm. Ndubuisi Kanu.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kanu, a former Military Governor of Imo and Lagos states died on Jan. 13 at the age of 77 years.
In a statement in Lagos on Monday, Udeogaranya said that Kanu was ‘ simply unforgettable’.
He said that Kanu had heart of gold and brought much honour to Igboland, hence, the need to immortalise him.
The former presidential aspirant added that Kanu was a man of integrity, principles and fairness.
“No one should question God and I am not about to, but I pray God to place Ndubuisi Kanu in His bosom in the land where there is no sorrow,” he said.
He also prayed that God would fulfil Kanu’s desire for a better Nigeria.
“I, therefore, ask the governments of Abia and Imo states to honour Kanu by setting aside a day as Ndubuisi Kanu’s day to serve as a reminder in the heart of our young ones that good virtues are worth more than silver and gold.
“Lagos State should also honour Ndubuisi Kanu as the most vibrant bridge builder on the handshake across the Niger.
NAN reports that in 1975, Kanu, who hailed from Ovim in Isuikwuato LGA of Abia, was appointed into the Supreme Military Council.
The then Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo dissolved the council when he assumed office in 1976 as Head of State.
Kanu fought on the Biafran side during the civil war, but was reabsorbed into the Nigerian military at the end of the war in 1970.
Kanu, who occupied many command and political offices as part of his military postings, civilianised himself when he retired from service.
He was a member of the pro-democracy group – National Democratic Coalition – which fought for the revalidation of the late Moshood Abiola’s annulled June 12, 1993, presidential mandate.
