House Rules Would Be Protected Under 9th Assembly – Deputy Speaker

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Ahmed Wase says the House would not distracted by mischief makers as it remain focused on delivering dividends of democracy to Nigerians.

Wase, while receiving a delegation of Plateau elders at his office on Thursday in Abuja, said that the Constitution and the Rules of the House would be protected under the watch of the 9th assembly.

The elders had pledged their support for the deputy speaker following his position on the controversial petition by the Mutual Union of Tiv in America (MUTA).

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that Wase, while presiding over plenary on March 1, rejected the petition for lack of legal identity.
He said that the house would remain guided by its rules and would not do anything outside the provisions of the law.
“We will not be distracted, we shall remain focused, we shall not throw away; we all remain one because we are guided by our rules.

“Those following the matter heard when the Speaker was asking the sponsor of the petition weather the identity of those who sent the petition have now signed and he confirmed that they have signed.

“We will not join issues with anybody, we will not be distracted but remain focus on what God has given us to do for Nigerians.

“We will try as much as possible to ensure justice to all Nigerians but we cannot by any means throw out our rules,” he said.

Wase said that the petition was not the first to be stepped down on the floor of the house citing serval examples based on the rules.

He said that mischief makers were behind the wrong information sent to the public that generated the outrage.

Wase, however, said that the house will focus on making Nigeria better and will not pay attention to mischief makers.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Mr Umar Shitein said that the narrative and the outage generated by the event was unfortunate.

Shitein said that Nigeria’s democracy was still developing and there was need for all asunder to protect it.

He stressed the need to respect elected leaders, saying that degrading national leaders would be degrading the country as a whole.
Shitein prayed for strength for the National Assembly as it strive to protect democracy and the freedom in Nigeria.
