Professor of Virology Oyewale Otomori has asked the country to look inward to address health issues, by using natural products, rather than depending on importation of medical consumables.
Otomori made the call on Thursday in Abuja during a book launch and round table discourse on infection control and wellness in Nigeria.
He said: “the country depends more on importation of drugs while we have enough materials and consumables that we can use to produce most of the drugs.’’
“The problem of the country is self-interest which overrides national interest.
“If national interest has been in the forefront, we will have produced some medicines and vaccines locally.
“Before now, Nigeria was producing some of the medication needed but, suddenly, things changed,’’ he said.
According to him, the country will be making head way in 2021 because there have been some progress being made over the production of vaccines.
He advised that the country should be prepared for any future pandemic so that what happened during COVID-19 would not occur again.
Otomori said that the book, `30 Laws for Good Health’, addressed issues of health which would enable the public to know what would be done.
“The solution to all the virus diseases in our country is our natural medicine, which when put into use will take Nigeria to the peak,’’ he said.
Dr Bola Olaosebikan, Publisher, Healthcare Magazine, said that the book had many recommendations for improvement of public health.
Olaosebikan said that the book would be a daily consult for readers to be able to handle their health issues.
“The book addresses how to improve our general health and the kind of food we need to eat to help us leave healthy,’’ he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that awards were given to some role models on issues of health.
