The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has commended some members of the party for their responses to the needs of the people of the state at this period of Coronavirus pandemic.
The state Chairman of the party, Chief Akin Oke, gave the commendation in a statement made available to newsmen on Friday in Ibadan.
Oke said that the party had shut down its activities in the state in accordance with the social distancing order of the state government to contain the spread of COVID-19.
He expressed the regret over the enormity of the anxiety and sorrow inflicted on the global community by the pandemic, expressing optimism that the virus would soon be curtailed.
“Back home, we are satisfied with the high level of empathy, concern and responsiveness demonstrated so far by some privileged members of our great party, APC.
“This is particularly in the areas of enlightenment of the general public, promotion of laudable intervention programmes of the Federal Government, personal donations of relief materials and handouts to the public without discrimination.
“It is on record that out of every five privileged individuals working passionately and genuinely to mitigate the effects of COVID-19 on the society, one is an Oyo APC member,” he said.
The APC chairman said that former and serving political office holders from the party had been working round the clock to create awareness on COVID-19 and to also provide relief materials for the people.
Oke commended the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari on the fight against COVID-19 pandemic, saying that they were efficacious and globally acknowledged.
“We are proud that most of the structures put in place by the immediate past administration of Sen. Abiola Ajimobi are being used by the PDP-led government in Oyo State.
“As the global community still battles to survive the Coronavirus pandemic, it is imperative for all well-meaning individuals and groups to rise up to the challenge of rescuing the poor from the pangs of hunger and hopelessness,” he said.
Oke appealed to members of the party, who had been up and doing in the face of the current situation, not to rest on their oars by ensuring that no stone was left unturned to reach more people at the grassroots.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that several members of the party had, since the outbreak of the virus in the state, distributed cash and other items to cushion the hardship, occasioned by the pandemic.
NAN recalls that Oke had, on March 27, ordered the shutdown of the party’s offices at the ward, local government and the state levels as well as cancellation of all political activities to contain the spread of Coronavirus in the state.
