Constitution Review: Kano Civil Society Forum Organises Consultative Meeting

The Kano Civil Society Forum (KCSF), a human-rights based NGO, has organised a one-day stakeholders’ consultative meeting, ahead of the Senate’s Constitutional review hearing scheduled for Kaduna on May 26.

The President of the Forum, Mr Ibrahim Waiya made this disclosure while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Monday, in Kano.

Waiya said that the Forum, which is an umbrella body of civil society organisations in the state, aimed to engage all relevant stakeholders in the state, in conjunction with the Centre for Democratic Studies. Mambayya House, on the public hearing.

“The meeting was for the stakeholders to discuss and contribute to the contents of a memorandum to be submitted on behalf of Kano citizens, at the Senate’s zonal public hearing on the Review of the 1999 Constitution.

“The Zonal public hearing is scheduled to hold on May 26 and 27, 2021. And we met at Mambayya House on May 20, to discuss the issue”, the forum president said.

Waiya added that the meeting was organised to give every stakeholder group in Kano, a chance to add their voice and make their contributions to the deliberations, adding that the memorandum to be presented, reflects the aspirations and expectations of Kano citizens, on the upcoming amendments proposed on the 1999 Constitution.

“The meeting was attended by many groups and organisations. The groups in attendance include; Council of Ulama, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), International Federation of Women Lawyers, (FIDA), Kano State Chamber of Commerce, Mines and Agriculture (KACCIMA) and also the Kano Forum.

“Other groups are; the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Academicians from the Bayero University Kano (BUK), Kano State Traders Union, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JSUN), Inter Party Advisory Council, Youth Groups, Women groups, and Retired police Officers, among others.” he said.
