RUBY001: A STORY OF GRACE, TENACITY AND UNWAVERING DETERMINATION

In the early days of my career as a student of Ahmadu Bello University, whenever I see my contemporaries or friends mingling with politicians or rather, school comrades I suddenly loose interest in the friendship and hang my relationship or friendship with them. The reason is not far from the general notion that politicians and the acclaimed school comrades are only power mongers with nothing tangible to bring to the table except to sing the Aluta song and mismanage public funds.
That narrative changed and I was forced to believe otherwise after my first encounter with Mohammed Adamu (Ruby001) in 2019. Ruby is the perfect definition of leaders are not born but they are made through conscious learning, determination and dedication. Ruby has etched his name in the hearts of many students within and outside the walls of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria making it difficult for the students to forget his name even for a second.
I am not speaking of, nor will I dwell on how he brought back the U19LGDS class from the brink of disintegration 2 years ago by sacrificing his long-term ambition for the greater goal and the general interest of the class. No, everyone knows that. Everybody is aware of how he hold the class and made it possible for his colleagues to thrive amidst social and economic challenges of the country.
Still, I will not talk about how he showed the lights of leadership since from childhood when he revive his secondary school sport department as the the director of sport and led it to its first interhouse sport after 7 years of idleness, we are all aware of how he convinced the school principal to give her consent to organize the groundbreaking inter-house sport which eventually, his house emerged victorious.
What I want to talk about is how he did his best to bring unity, peace and progress among the class reps of ABU Zaria, as the Senior Special Assistant to The ABU SRC President on Class Rep Affairs. Under the leadership of comrade Muhammad Aminu Abdul’azeez.

Ruby, doused alot of pressure in the course of exercising his duties to bring back class reps of ABU from the brink of dismay.
Few days after his appointment, Ruby visited all the stakeholders to get first hand report of unfortunate situations, lapses and possible ways to solve the enormous challenges facing the class reps forum of ABU Zaria. To show his commitment and steadfastness to solve these challenges, Ruby submitted a proposal on how to tackle these challenges which encapsulates a Capacity Building for all class reps. Giving birth to a LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP to enhance the leadership poweress of the class reps and ensure effective delivery.
With welfare of all the chairmen in his heart, Ruby conducted a head count of all the chairmen and their assistants to ensure all chairmen are given proper attention and appreciate their efforts every year through Maiden program and ISSUANCE OF CERTIFICATES TO ALL GRADUATING CHAIRMEN and their assistants.
Again, for the first time in the history of Kongo Campus, Class reps are witnessing a wide coverage and publicity as their pictures have now been laid on a SELF-FUNDED BANNER by Ruby to give them wide coverage and ensure easy access to them. Apart from being the only SSA among the numerous SAs’ and SSAs’ to the ABU SRC President to achieve all his proposals and agendas, Ruby has in the course of his leadership career received awards of appreciation and merit in recognition of his selfless service, mentorship and dedicated leadership to students.

In 2021, Ruby received the award of BEST CHAIRMAN OF THE YEAR from the ASSOCIATION OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND DEVELOPMENT STUDIES STUDENTS (ASLOGAD) in recognition of his unique leadership and selfless service to his class. He received the award of COMRADE ICON of the year from FASA in the same year in recognition of his students centered Comradeship. Lest I forget, the Kogi State Union President, National Union Of Borno Students (NUBOSS) and Governor of Ali Akilu Hostel have all extended their hands to Ruby to benefit from his vast experience and wealth of knowledge. He served the Kogi President as his Liason Officer, he was the director of sport of Ali Akilu Hostel in 2021, and served NUBOSS as PRO 1 and currently the secretary general of the great Union.
One sometimes get weary of writing the achievements of comrades and political icons like Adamu (Ruby001) because they have achieved almost everything in the shortest period, I can’t help but to close with his regular advice to students to where he’s quoted to have said; ” Strike a balance between extracurricular activities and class room activities, both are important and you need to master them to achieve a greater height in your field. As a Law student learn the art of mooting and legal drafting. The same applies to political scientists, Local government students and Public Administrators”.
On a final note, despite all the afro-mentioned awards enormous achievements Ruby has never contested for a position in the ABU SRC his state association (NUBOSS), Faculty of Administration Students Association (FASA) and Association of Local Government and Development Studies (ASLOGAD). This is the perfect time to repay him for the years of hard work and selfless service to the general welfare of ABU students. As the popular saying goes, ONE GOOD TURN DESERVE ANOTHER.
