Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has charged traditional rulers in the state to ensure peace and security in their communities.
Mohammed gave the charge, on Saturday, during his inspection of ongoing and completed projects in Nabordo (Jamma) district of Toro Local Government area of the state.
The governor said that traditional rulers were very close to the people in the community and have, therefore, the responsibility of ensuring and sustaining peace and security in the state.
“Traditional rulers are closer to the people. As a result, they serve as a bridge between the people and government. They also help to translate government policies and programmes for the people.
“There is no gainsaying the fact that peace is central and key to human existence and development,” he said.
He added that given the increasing insecurity and incidence of insurgency in the country, traditional rulers must be deeply involved in policies and programmes put in place by the government to arrest the menace.
“Government always appreciates and acknowledges the importance of traditional rulers in good governance, peace and unity of our people.
“I implore traditional rulers across the state to create synergy with all our law enforcement agencies, to achieve the most desired peace and security,” Mohammed said, while asking them to always know that the people causing insecurity lived within the communities.
“They are not spirits at all and working closely with the security agencies, these undesirable elements in society should not be accommodated,” the governor said.
Mohammed reiterated that his government would continue to collaborate with traditional rulers in the state to ensure that there was sustainable peace and security, noting that the state was the most peaceful in the North-East zone.
He noted that collaborating with the traditional rulers would further promote peace and security of the state, especially that no meaningful development can take place in an atmosphere devoid of peace and security.
Responding, the District head of Nabordo Jamma, Alhaji Bala Sulaiman, commended the efforts of the governor in the provision of health, education and other infrastructure for the citizens. (NAN)
