The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking to raise the budget of the state by N99.2 billion through a supplementary budget.

The bill was considered in the committee of the whole House after scaling the third reading at the plenary on Thursday.

Governor Abba Yusuf presented the bill on August 26, 2024 where he sought to increase the budget to tune of N536, 559, 816, 357.84 from an initial N437, 338, 312, 787 signed into law in December 2023.

Speaking to journalists shortly after passage, the Chairman, House Committee on Appropriation, Hon Aminu Sa’ad, highlighted that 58% of the budget is earmarked for capital expenditure while 42% is projected for recurrent expenditure.

Hon Sa’ad added that the supplementary budget will cover the upcoming local government elections, payment of new minimum wage, running cost at the newly established ministries and reopened vocational institutions as well as other government priority projects.

Similarly, the Assembly also called on the state government to build hostels to provide conducive accommodation for students of the Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil.

Member representing Wudil Constituency in the House, Abdullahi Manager, noted that the institution has students as far as Ghana and other states, but is lacking in befitting accommodation which has resulted in renting expensive apartments and congestion of both male and female students’ hostels.
