Mr Ocholi Yusuf, Chairman, Waves of Success Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation, has cautioned rural communities against believing that Coronavirus  is a myth or disease of the rich.

Yusuf made the call at the commencement of the second phase of distribution of one million hand sanitisers and preventive sensitisation in Kogi East Senatorial District to curtail spread of the disease, on Friday in Ogbagba community, Ofu Local Government Area.

He said the disease was neither a myth nor a “big man’s disease” as being erroneously subscribed, stressing that it was real and had no respect for age, sex or social status.

He urged the people to strictly observe the social distancing directive and ensure personal hygiene to curtail further spread of the disease ,saying it was easier and better to prevent than manage the virus.

The chairman cautioned that the virus had no known cure for now and would be devastating if allowed to permeate the rural communities in view of their precarious and vulnerable situation.

He urged the people to avoid social gatherings including family and community meetings and comply with the state government’s directive ordering civil servants on grade level 01 to level 13 to work from home.

He urged them to adhere to the ban on gathering of up to 30 people in a place at a time.

Speaking earlier, Mr John Ocheja, Executive Director of the Foundation, said the distribution of one million hand sanitisers which was launched at Ejule on March 20, had moved on to second phase with the organisation moving from community to community.

Ocheja said the exercise did not call for normal gathering of the rural populace as they were using public address system to sensitise and create awareness, saying a larger population would be covered in the second phase.

He said the effort was aimed at complementing both the state and Federal Governments’ initiatives at preventing and controlling spread of the virus.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exercise took the team to Ogbagba, Alome, Umomi and Ofakaga among communities in Ofu Local Government Area where the hand sanitisers were distributed to artisans, market women, farmers and youth.
