The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) organized a two-day stakeholder meeting on August 24-25, 2024, to address flood safety, sensitization, and awareness for boat owners, drivers, and passengers in Kebbi State.

The meeting, attended by representatives from the Emir of Yauri, HYPPAD, Yauri Local Government Area, and enforcement agencies, focused on the dangers posed by ongoing floods and the importance of adhering to safety protocols. Key discussions centered on mandatory safety measures, including:

Wearing life jackets before boarding boats, Prohibiting nighttime travel, Having functional fire extinguishers on board and than to adhering loading limits to prevent capsizing

NIWA officials emphasized that these measures are essential practices to avoid tragedies. The agency also highlighted the recent transportation code enacted by the legislative house, which mandates wearing life jackets for all passengers.

The meeting concluded with a call to action, urging waterway users to take responsibility for their safety and others. NIWA reiterated the importance of enforcing these guidelines to prevent further loss of life, especially during the rainy season.
