A severe flood has ravaged the Dodoru Market in Gwandu Local Government, Kebbi State, destroying over 51 shops and stalls. The market, a major revenue generator for the state, attracts thousands of traders and customers from across the region every Monday.
The flood, which occurred on Monday, has left the market in ruins, with many traders losing their goods and livelihoods. The market’s cattle, provisions, and commodities sections were severely impacted, with tons of fertilizer, salt, and other produce ruined.
Traders and customers are reeling from the disaster, counting their losses. “I lost over 60 bags of salt and other goods,” said one trader. “I don’t know how I will recover.”
The Market Association Chairman, Alhaji Bello Aliyu Gwandu, has appealed to the state government for assistance. “This market is the lifeblood of our community, and we need help to rebuild and recover,” he said.
The chairman attributed the flood to the lack of proper drainage systems, citing the construction of a nearby road that blocked the existing drainages. “We need the state government to urgently address this issue and provide a lasting solution to prevent future disasters,” he said.
