A crowd of Kano protesters rallied in support of dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero as they trooped to the streets on Sunday afternoon, demanding for his reinstatement as the sole and legitimate Emir of Kano State.
The crowd comprising largely young individuals took to the streets around 4pm following a special prayer session at the Nasarawa Mini Palace, where they prayed for Bayero’s successful reinstatement.
The protest quickly gained momentum, with demonstrators setting bonfires.
Security operatives present during the protest did not intervene to halt the procession of the deposed Emir’s supporters but allowed them to move without confrontation.
Protesters carried placards bearing inscriptions such as “Abba Kabir Yusuf, Obey Court Order,” “You Must Obey The Court,” “Aminu Is Still Our Emir,” and “We Are Against Injustice,” chanting, “We want the return of Aminu,” while making their demands clear.
A protester, Usaini Rabiu Kunya emphasied the call for the government to adhere to legal rulings. “Our king Aminu Ado has ordered us to be peaceful and law-abiding, so we are peacefully calling on the government to follow the court order.”
Another protester, Abubakar Garba, appealed to President Bola Tinubu to ensure justice in the royal dispute. “We call on the president to ensure that justice prevails in this royal tussle.”
The protest is the latest in a dispute that began with the Kano House of Assembly repealing the law used by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje to dethrone Emir Mohammad Sanusi II and creating four new emirates, including that of Bayero.
Governor Abba Yusuf’s recent decision to dissolve these Emirates has polarised the state alongside the supporters of both parties.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Governor and have moved to the Main Emir’s palace alongside the reinstated Emir Sanusi II.
