Australia’s Victoria state Premier Daniel Andrews on Tuesday said he has been admitted to the intensive care in hospital after falling from stairs at his home.

“A CT scan has revealed several broken ribs and vertebrae damage, and subsequent medical advice has recommended I remain in intensive care for the next few days,” Andrews said in a statement.

Andrews said state Deputy Premier James Merlino will serve as the acting premier until he recovers from the accident.

Andrews suffered a “nasty fall” while getting ready for work, Merlino told reporters, just hours before he was to host a media conference to announce an inquiry into the effects of colonisation on the state’s indigenous community.
