Prof. Abdulmumin Ahmed of Faculty of Law Bayero University Kano, has challenged the media on changing the narratives on maternal and new born health to a better perspective.

He gave the charge on Saturday, while making a presentation at a two-day capacity building training for the media on strengthening accountability in maternal health delivery chain.

Ahmed attributed the high rate of maternal mortality to lack of education especially on genotypes of couples before beginning child bearing.

“There is need for proper genetic education to couples about expectations and precautions in child bearing.”

He further tasked the media on creating an open discussion on maternal health issues for generation of commitment and intervention into the persisting issue.

Ahmed appealed to government for the amendment and implementation of policies related to the issue, to save lives of women and children in the country before, during and after child birth.

The Director Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education, Dr Ibrahim Zikrullahi, said the training was organised as an intervention to track the efficiency and effectiveness of maternal health spending.

The Director said, “Despite adequate constitutional provisions and hefty annual budgetary allocation in the country, thousands of women and children still died due to lack of access to quality healtcare support before, during and after child birth.

He pledged his organisation’s support to the media and civil society bodies, in exploring innovative, effective and sustainable ways to reduce maternal and child mortality in the country.

NAN reports that the Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education, a non governmental organisation, has trained 12 journalists in Kano, on strengthening accountability in maternal health delivery chain.
