Following are some major events to have occurred on May 27:

1937 – San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge opened and 200,000 people crossed it on its first day. It had taken four years, four months and 22 days to complete.

1963 – Jomo Kenyatta was elected first prime minister of a self-governing Kenya, becoming state president on independence from Britain the following year.

1964 – Jawaharlal Nehru, first prime minister of independent India, died at 74.

1997 – Diana, Princess of Wales, opens Richard Attenborough centre for Disability and Arts in Leicester.

1999 – The U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague confirmed it had indicted Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic as a war criminal.

1999 – Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” unveiled in Milan after 20 years of restoration work.

2002 – Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali won approval for constitutional reforms, enabling him to rule practically for life.

2005 – Indonesia and Aceh separatists reached agreement on crucial political issues in a big step towards a deal to end one of Asia’s longest running armed struggles.

2007 – International Cricket Council President Percy Sonn, a key figure in the racial integration of the game in his native South Africa, died at 57.

2013 – Romanian flag measuring 349.4 by 226.9 metres sets record for world’s biggest national flag.

2016 – Barack Obama becomes first U.S. President to visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.
