The Kuje Area Council, FCT, has suspended all motorcycle operations in the area in order to curb community spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr Abdullahi Sabo, the Chairman of Kuje Area Council, announced this at a news conference in Kuje on Tuesday.
Sabo said that the development followed the daily increase of confirmed cases of the pandemic in the FCT, and influx of motorcycle riders to rural communities.
“As we are all aware, COVID-19 pandemic is no longer news, it is a global issue that government at all level is fighting to curtail its spread.
“The rate at which the virus is spreading is a cause for concern and the need to take proactive measures to curtail its spread into our communities cannot be over emphasised.
“While appreciating the understanding of our people at this critical moment of lockdown, I am aware of the hardship we are all passing through; I want to appeal for more sacrifice and endurance,” he said.
He, however, appealed to residents to take the lockdown order by the Federal Government seriously, noting that the fight to check the pandemic depended largely on complying with directive given by the government.
“On this note, we are not only given mandate to make easy decision with heart felt, I deem it necessary to announce the suspension of motorcycle operations within Kuje and environs till further notice.
“I therefore call on everyone to remain law abiding and continue to pray and ask God for intervention. As an administration we shall handle the defaulters and treat them in accordance with the law.
“I therefore, want to use this medium to thank all organisations and individuals that in one way or the other assisted the area council with palliatives, may the Almighty reward them in million fold,” he said.
Sabo said all persons who venture out of their homes for whatever reason must wear face masks and observe social distancing everywhere they go, in markets and in vehicles.
The chairman, while urging all residents to remain indoors, also urged them to restrict movement at crowded areas like the markets.
Reacting on behalf of the motorcycle operators, Sabo Abdullahi (Senior) Chairman Motorcycle Operators Restructuring Committee, warned that violators would face the wrath of the law.
