Eze Joseph Mbamara, the Traditional Ruler of Amato Amaraku Community in Imo has lauded Gov. Hope Uzodimma for the 2.5-km road being constructed to permanently check flooding in the area.

Mbamara made the commendation in an interview with journalists, who were on an inspection of projects embarked upon by the Uzodimma’s administration in the three Senatorial Zones of the state.

He described the flooding as a “major perennial problem” to the community.

He said the community had made several appeals to previous administrations over their plight to no avail.

According to him, this our community is flood prone. So, every rainy season, we go through difficult times.

“Whenever it rained, we literally swim in the flood to go out or come into our houses.

“We cried to high heaven all year round but no intervention came to us until this administration came to our rescue.

“The flood became a major threat to people’s buildings and was gathering momentum and could become a potential threat to life, if not permanently addressed.

“I am happy and my people are happy that finally, the Pharaoh that knows Joseph has come and we hope that this work will put an end to the menace.”

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Declan Emelumba, said the drain, measuring about 10-ft deep, was being constructed to collect floodwater from the area down to Uguri River.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the media team also inspected the ongoing work on the Owerri-Okigwe Road and Owerri-Orlu Road, being constructed by the state.

Emelumba described the roads as strategic, saying that the Owerri-Okigwe Road connects about nine local government areas (LGAs), while the Owerri-Orlu Road connects about eight (LGAs).

“The roads are vital and strategic to the state because they will change the matix of the economic life of the LGAs, when completed,” he said.

The commissioner also conducted the newsmen round the rehabilitated five-kilometer Stadium Road and four-kilometer St. Mary’s Road, both in Okigwe.
