A 49 year- old trader, Awele Okoronkwo, on Tuesday appeared in a  Magistrates’ Court in Ogudu, Lagos, for allegedly cheating used clothes seller of N496,000.

The police charged Okoronkwo, whose address was not provided, with obtaining money under false pretenses and cheating.

The Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Donjour Perezi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence in July 2019, at Ogudu, Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes three years’ jail term for stealing, while Section 314 attracts 15 years for obtaining money under false pretense.

Following her plea of not guilty, Magistrate Mrs Bukola Mogaji, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Mogaji ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidences of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The magistrate  adjourned the matter until March 26.
