1929 – The Papal State was revived when the Vatican was established in Rome. It had not existed since 1870.
1937 – Jean Harlow, legendary U.S. actress of the 1930s in such films as “Hell’s Angels”, died at the age of 26.
1942 – The Battle of Midway came to an end, inflicting the first major naval defeat on the Japanese in World War Two.
1973 – Willy Brandt visited Israel, the first visit by a West German leader to the country.
1981 – Israeli planes attacked and destroyed the Osirak nuclear reactor near Baghdad, Iraq.
1989 – Wayne Gretzky named NHL’s Most Valuable Player for record ninth time.
1997 – Caoimhghin O Caolain won a seat in Ireland’s election becoming the first member of Sinn Fein, political ally of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) guerrilla group, to enter Ireland’s parliament.
2004 – A Rwandan court sentenced former president Pasteur Bizimungu to 15 years in jail for charges that included creating a militia, embezzling state funds and inciting ethnic violence.
2005 – Anne Bancroft, Oscar and Tony Award winner, died aged 73. She was immortalised as Helen Keller’s teacher in “The Miracle Worker” and the seductive Mrs. Robinson in the iconic 1967 film “The Graduate”.
2014 – Dozens killed in massacre in South Kivu, DRC.
2015 – Bradley Wiggins breaks cycling’s hour record.
