The Borno State government said it is working to create viable alternatives for Persons with Disability (PWD) who are engaged in street begging.
The state Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, disclosed this yesterday in Maiduguri at an event to commemorate the International Day for Persons with Disabilities.
Tar said the Zulum’s administration would ensure that PWD has access to rehabilitation programmes that will equip them with the necessary skills for sustainable livelihoods.
The Commissioner for Intergovernmental Affairs and Special Duties, Ibrahim Tukur, also reiterated the state government’s commitment to creating an environment that respects and upholds the rights of persons with disabilities.
He said, “The state government has implemented policies and initiatives to promote inclusion and eliminate discrimination against PWD.
“Efforts include providing accessible infrastructure, inclusive education, vocational training, and employment opportunities. However, we acknowledge that more work needs to be done.”
