The Pan-northern Socio-political organization, Northern Alternative Forum has congratulated Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala after she was appointed new director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Monday.

Applauding the “timely” appointment, the National Chairman of Northern Alternative Forum, Mallam Gidado Ibrahim noted that “the collective decision made by the entire membership demonstrates a vote of trust not only in Dr. Ngozi herself, but also in our vision, our expectation and the multilateral trading system that we all believe and preserve.”

Okonjo-Iweala who hails from Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State, was a two-time Minister of Finance who led Nigeria’s economy to exit foreign debt obligations during her first term under former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Ibrahim described Okonjo-Iweala as a competent, and world-class economist whose works over the years have distinguished her globally.

He added that the appointment of Okonjo-Iweala has broken the 24-year-old jinx of a female becoming head of the WTO, adding that she is the first African to lead the global trade body in its 26-year history.

“Northern Alternative Forum find it worthy of appreciation to applaud President Buhari’s effort in suporting Ngozi’s bid for the WTO chair.

“History will remember Buhari and his administration for such a selfless service to Nigeria and the entire African continent.” He said.

The Northern group also thanked the newly elected president of the United States of America, Biden for his support.
