Nasarawa NUJ Gets New Leadership

The Nasarawa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), on Thursday elected new executive to run its affairs for the next three years.

The election which held at the NUJ Press Centre Lafia,  saw Salihu Alkali of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Precious FM, emerge as chairman having polled a total of 140 votes to defeat Sulieman Abubakar of Nagarta Radio, Kaduna, who polled 48 votes.

Similarly, Mr Sunday John of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)   was elected secretary of the council with 102 votes against his opponent, Mammara Onyapa of the Federated Chapel who scored 84 votes.

Mr Gbemiga Bamidele, Assistant National Secretary of the NUJ, who declared the results, said all other officials were returned unopposed.

Alkali, in his inaugural speech, thanked members of the union for the confidence reposed in him to serve.

He promised to run the union transparently in the interest of all members and called for support to enable the new leadership succeed.

Inaugurating the officials, Mr Chris Isiguzo, NUJ National President, represented by Mr Wilson Bako, Vice President ‘Zone-D,’ congratulated the council for a rancour-free election.

He charged the new executive to carry all members along while  assuring the council of necessary support from the headquarters.

Also, Mr  Dogo Shammah, Commissioner of Information, Culture and Tourism congratulated the union for the peaceful conduct of the election.

Shammah restated the state government’s commitment to sustain the cordial relationship with the NUJ.

He urged journalists in the state to always uphold professional ethics in the discharge of their responsibility.

Shammah while congratulating the newly inaugurated leadership  tasked them to be innovative  in conducting the affairs of the Council.
