Kano Fire Service Saves 430 Lives, N3bn Property In 6 Months

The Kano State Fire Service said it had saved 430 lives and property worth over N3 billion in 496 fire incidents in the past six months in the state.

The Spokesman of the Service, Alhaji Saidu Mohammed, made the disclosure in a statement on Monday in Kano.

Mohammed, however, disclosed that 74 persons lost their lives and property worth N534 million destroyed by fire between January and June.

He said that that the service recorded 260 rescue calls and 100 false alarms from residents within the period under review.

The spokesman attributed the fire incidents to road accidents, use of inferior electrical gadgets and boiling rings as well as poor application of electrical appliances and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

While calling on the people to handle fire with care to avoid inferno, Mohammed urged parents to monitor their wards against swimming in ponds.

Meanwhile, the Service confirmed that a Power Substation was vandalised at Dan-Agundi area of the metropolis in an early morning inferno on Monday.

“We received a distress call on Monday morning, at about 11:00 a.m. from Dan-Agundi branch of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) of fire outbreak at the station.

“We deployed personnel and fire fighting vehicles to the scene of the incident to control the fire.

“A 15 MvA transformer was affected, the fire was brought under control, no casualties recorded,” he said, adding that investigation was ongoing to ascertain the cause of the incident.
