Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe state has advised residents of the state against indiscriminate dumping of waste in restricted areas, especially drainage and waterways.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor gave the charge on Saturday while inspecting ongoing road and erosion control projects in Gombe metropolis.

He said his administration was committed to ensuring habitable and healthy environment for the people, as well as well address infrastructural deficit in the state so that the people can get dividends of democracy.

He said that since compensations had been paid to people whose structures were removed to pave the way for the project, there should no longer be buildings on waterways or close to gullies after completion of the project.

While inspecting a gully site at Makeran Kasuwa (market), the governor said that he was there to assess the situation some four months back.

”And, today we have addressed the issue and you can see it.

“ I urge you all to desist from dumping wastes indiscriminately in gullies.

”I have always said this, there is no reason for people to return to this site after fixing the problem; do not build here, don’t dump wastes in gullies,” he said.

He added that those dumping wastes and building on waterways would only be contributing to the environmental threats posed by erosion as a result of their action.

“ If you have wastes, keep them at the collection points for proper evacuation by officials of the state’s environmental board,” he said.

He urged the people to maintain all completed projects in their domains, assuring that his administration would continue to initiate projects that would impact on the living standard of the people.

NAN further reports that the governor also inspected ongoing works at the N2.9 billion erosion control project at the Gombe State University where he made some observations to the contractor, who in turn promised to address the governor’s concerns.

Yahaya stressed that his administration was also concerned about the quality of works so that such project could benefit the people for a much longer period.(NAN)
