Flood: Enugu Govt. Warns Against Dumping Refuse In Drains

The Enugu State Government has warned communities in flood prone areas against dumping of refuse in drains.

The state government also directed communities to set up taskforce to check indiscriminate dumping of refuse in water courses.

The Commissioner for Works, Mr Greg Nnaji, gave the directive in a statement on Saturday on the sidelines of a flood storm scour-out in a newly constructed road in the state.

Nnaji attributed the flooding, which occurred along the Nike Lake -Umuchigbo-Harmony Estate -Adoration -Emene Road to indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drains.

“This has evidently resulted in some washout at two locations on the asphalted pavement wearing course and lined drainage.

“We had taken into cognisance the forest vegetation of the landscape and provided adequately for the hydraulic structures,” he said.

The commissioner said that indiscriminate dumping of refuse and debris in the drains would always impede water run-offs and overflow the pavement as noticed.

“We commend the Umuchigbo community for setting up task force to monitor and bring to book offenders.

We also encourage Emene community to do the same,” he said.

Nnaji said that the ministry had directed the contractors that worked on the roads back to site for immediate remediation.
