The Stand Up for Women Society (SWS), an NGO, has donated delivery kits, sanitary pads and detergents to over 200 expectant mothers in Gombe State.

Mrs Ruth Absalom, Gombe State Chapter Chairperson of the association, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Thursday.

NAN reports that Standup for Women Society is a networking forum, created as an umbrella to promote women affairs and influence the minds, actions and practices of the general public at various government levels, to support and ensure fair share responsibilities for women.

Absalom said the gesture was in the spirit of the world breast feeding month, aimed at encouraging women attending antenatal care services.

She emphasised the importance of breastfeeding to both mother and child, saying breastfeeding should be initiated to the child, 30 minutes of delivery.

She urged women to exclusively breastfeed their children for six months before introducing complementary feeding to the baby, saying such is the first immunisation that prevents the child from childhood diseases.

She appreciated the state Commissioner for Environment, Dr Hussaini Goje, United Nations population Fund UNFPA and Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria (PPFN) for collaborating with the association in presenting the items distributed.
