The Kebbi House of Assembly has passed the State Electricity Regulatory Commission Bill, 2024, to regulate electricity in the state. This development followed the consideration of a report from the House Committee on Rural and Community Development, presented during the assembly’s plenary session on Thursday.
According to Alhaji Faruku Abubakar, Chairman of the committee, the bill aims to promote access to electricity through increased private sector and public investments, as well as private partnerships in grid, mini-grid, and other off-grid electricity options. The bill comprises 120 sections and a schedule, and was scrutinized through a public hearing on September 24.
The regulation will cover areas such as electricity generation, transmission, system operation, distribution, and supply. The bill was unanimously adopted by the lawmakers after a voice vote.
This move is expected to boost electricity supply in Kebbi State, providing relief to residents and businesses. Similar initiatives have been taken by other states, such as Edo and Enugu, to regulate and improve electricity supply.
