Former Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) director, Chief David Sabo Kente, has expressed deep concern over the recent devastating floods that have ravaged Borno State.
In a statement, Kente, who was out of the country at the time, shared his heartbreak upon witnessing the devastation through television broadcasts and news reports.
Offering prayers for the families of those affected, Kente also praised the global relief efforts underway.
“I’m heartened by the support from around the world, including contributions from UN agencies,” he said.
Kente extended his commendation to the NEDC, the agency he once served, for its prompt response to the crisis.
The commission has allocated N3 billion to support flood victims—a measure Kente described as “extraordinary” and a source of personal pride.
However, Kente raised concerns about future disasters, specifically pointing to the precarious condition of the Gwete Dam.
He warned that the dam is on the brink of collapse and, without urgent repairs after the rainy season, the region could face even more catastrophic flooding.
He urged the federal government to prioritize repairs to the dam, stressing the importance of swift action to prevent further loss of life and property.
Kente concluded by expressing his solidarity with the people of Borno, Governor Babagana Zulum, and Vice President Kashim Shettima, and prayed for divine protection against future disasters.
